A Whisper of Smoke edition by Angela Hoke Literature Fiction eBooks

At thirteen, Susanna doesn’t realize she has a dysfunctional family – they are just hers. But when family secrets emerge that threaten Susanna and her siblings, she begins to see that things are not as simple as she’s always believed. Time passes, and as Susanna grows older to the backdrop of the 1960s, her best friends Calvin and Shelly are right beside her -- until her feelings for Calvin grow beyond friendship, and suddenly the world has turned upside down. Not even Shelly’s brash humor can break through her heartbreak as Calvin deploys to Vietnam, in love with someone else and even more out of reach than ever.
But then Susanna realizes that Calvin needs her like never before, and she won't abandon him - even at the expense of her own heart. And as trouble at home reaches its pinnacle, Susanna's sense of honor, and fault, are challenged by Calvin’s experiences in war. Now, even as her love for Calvin threatens to destroy her, she finds herself at a crossroads - repeat the mistakes of the past or face the awful truth. And, with her dysfunctional family surrounding her, it all boils down to a choice between fear and hope.
A WHISPER OF SMOKE is a coming-of-age love story that is rich and deeply sensitive. Winner of the 2014 Maggie Award for Excellence and the 2014 Heart of Denver Aspen Gold Award, it “reminds us of how exciting, beautiful and painful growing up really is." -- Judge, Writers' Digest

Growing up in the South, especially the rural South, is in itself a maturing, strengthening and mellowing experience. There are the usual clichés such as “charm,” “belle,” “gentleman,” “manners,” “hick,” etc. that are nice, but not always accurate to real life experiences. However, in A Whisper of Smoke Angela Hoke has created an incredibly insightful and poignant account of an average, but sensitive, young girl as she muddles her way through adolescence into womanhood without the assistance of an emotionally stable mother and morally strong father. Not bad people, just weak.Susanna’s strength of character and loving nature had to be developed from her own innate gifts from God. Her sense of responsibility for her siblings and recognition of her parents love for her despite their dysfunctional and irresponsible lifestyle regarding their children was the core of her maturity and character. Then there was the dark side of family secrets that had to be overcome.
Her first attraction to Calvin was very realistic and gently portrayed for a 13-year-old girl. The high standards of morality, both sexual and cultural, that were ingrained in Susanna, Calvin and later Daniel were exceptional portrayals of the origin of some of the clichés attributed to Southern living. The friendship and love story between Susanna and Calvin was sweet, realistic, heart wrenching, tragic and painful as they lived with the chaos of the situations of the time, their own choices and their own strong moral standards. The humorous friendship/love letters exchanged between them when Calvin went to Viet Nam were almost poetic and very touching.
The enduring love, devotion and support of Daniel for Susanna during much of this time were gratifying examples of a gentleman with good manners and sensitive compassion that all women hope to have in their lives. And admirably Susanna was mature enough to recognize and appreciate the good man that he was.
Thank you, Angela, for a wonderful read. It felt good reminiscing growing up in the South (Tenn.) and shedding a few tears along with Susanna. I will read this book again and shed more tears.
I highly recommend reading A Whisper of Smoke.

A Whisper of Smoke edition by Angela Hoke Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Set in Kentucky during the '50's and '60's Susanna is our protagonist. We meet her parents, older sister, baby brother and sister, neighbors, working through her coming of age as a teenager with boyfriends. We also are introduced to the terror of the sexually abused child and the time in Vietnam of her best friend.....and later his death. The ending is excellently handled with her wedding and the family she and her husband have. They take the steps to prevent the sexual abuse from moving into another generation. I recommend this one. It's set in Louisville, Ky. A few mentions someone might know but the schools are composites of the actually schools that were in the area during the time frame.
I absolutely LOVED this book! In the 60’s I was approximately the same age as Susanna is, so I could easily relate to the events, the social relationships, and even the family dynamics. A must read for those who enjoy coming-of-age novels!
First of all I have to say that I almost deleted this book from my when I read the reviews from the others... But some inner voice was telling me to give it a try. So why not? And as I was finishing the book, I told myself that it is one of the best I have ever read. Seriously, it had a great impact on me, on my soul. I was crying all the morning (it started from around 80% of the book) and it was even more than when I was reading the Sophie's Choice written by William Styron. I especially love the main protagonist Susanna, her thinking and I was feeling very sympathetic to her suffering. I did not have easy adolescence as many of us, but we should realize that we have to move on and forget everyone... I think that this is also the main goal of this story.
I am really happy it is possible to get so good inspiring books for free (I bought it for free in Sep 2014). I highly recommend it to everyone, even to men.
Thank You, Angela Hoke! I am looking forward to reading Your next books.
This is one of the best coming-of-age books I have read for a long time. A girl's first kiss and first love; her love for her dysfunctional family; trying to understand why her parents seem to be able to forgive the unforgivable...and an author who tackles a sensitive subject, and does it well. The letters between Susanna and Calvin show the importance of having a friend with whom you can be brutally honest, but also show clearly..painfully...some of the horrors faced daily by the Viet Nam War soldiers. And it was snicker-out-loud in some places,.. such as when she draped her bedroom lamp with a red scarf. Being from this part of Kentucky, I enjoyed the familiar places mentioned. The clothes dscribed brought back memories of my students during the 60s. All in all, this would be a good book club selection, or a book for anyone who enjoys a good, well-told story. I recommend it.
I don't remember how I stumbled across this book but am so glad I did!
This story really pulled at my heart - and that alone says a lot coming from a grumpy old man. It made me relive my teenage years in a way although my circumstances were very different. Being able to see a teenage girls life through her own eyes from many years ago was awesome.
The writing was superb along with the editing. I don't hand out 5 stars too often but this book certainly deserved it in my opinion.
Half way through the book, enjoying it so much, I looked up the author here on only to be dismayed that there are no other books. This is oustanding being a first book! Signed up for updates awaiting Ms. Hoke's next book.
