Stefan has ... fantasies.

He knows chasing those fantasies is only going to end in disaster, but he can't seem to stop his self-destructive spiral. He’s a transgender man struggling to come to terms with the intersection of his identity and his sexual fantasies as a submissive. He needs someone to take control before he loses it completely.

Daz can take control. He can teach Stefan everything there is to know about sex and submission, but for some reason, he can't get inside Stefan's head. Daz can stop Stefan’s self-destruction but not the fear that fuels it.

Stefan needs to know who he is before he can accept what he is. And it's Yannis -- Daz's aromantic, asexual, stern, and sarcastic partner -- who has the answer.

Sex in C Major Matthew J Metzger 9781545148488 Books

This book is breathtaking. It delves into heavy, heartbreaking topics and drags some of the darkest, most painful emotions out of you. And then, when you least expect it, you'll laugh. You'll smile. It certainly contains concepts that are not for everyone, and is chock full of triggers surrounding rape, sexual violence, sexual slavery, and body dysmorphia. Even those of us who are part of the DS/BDSM world may find certain scenes difficult to complete. But the author manages to eloquently guide the reader from the worst elements of the main character's journey into the calm that is his self-awareness and self-acceptance.

Sex in C Major Matthew J Metzger 9781545148488 Books Reviews

MM is normally an autobuy author for me, full stop. For once, though, I read the book blurb and despite it being a ménage, which is not my fave read, I still wanted to read it. But, the blurb did not prepare me for what I encountered. I ended up feeling physically sick, feeling as if my brain had been vi***ted, and not because of the BDSM content (the trans character is into pain, humiliation and kink) but more about how the trans character is portrayed.

Stefan seems to have no sense of worth, no self-pride, no expectations from life. He both states that he is a man, but seems to hate himself and also call himself a girl, referring to his vagina as the c-word, which yes, in context, works, because of his self-hating nature (as he was portrayed). He also hates his breasts, which I understood, as he's FtM trans on T, but without any surgery as yet, and from the way he was described (getting T off the internet, on benefits, a weed-smoker), he wasn't under a doctor and any formal trans procedures/discussions were not on the table and would not be for years. To my mind, Stefan was in a cycle of hate/hurt because he hated his part-male, part-female body and kept referring to himself as a man when he orgasmed via his cock (this we were told repeatedly) but also as a female.

He hated having his breasts touched, yet the Daz character, who supposedly had previous experience with trans males, still grabbed them (and far worse, but I’m not going to go there), until belatedly, Stefan explained his feelings about them. This felt incredibly belated, though, yes, I see why MM made this part of the tale, given Stefan's personality. I felt that Daz should have talked about boundaries re Stefan's body, as he certainly agreed hard play limits with him, and before they even started anything, had agreed a safeword. Daz did apologise, but, it felt like too little, too late - and yet, I could see his human failing portrayed pretty realistically, and given that he was revealed as not gay, but bi.

This part felt like a vi****ion - I felt vi***ted. I mentioned feeling sick about this - as if the above wasn't enough, Stefan turned out to be a virgin, and yes, he was into pain and humiliation, but to be fingered anally and vaginally and to have both virginities taken with the aid of dildos, was just too much for me. The pain MM described had me retching. When later, there was mention of Stefan's T treatments not being far along enough for a certain bodily function to stop, and him struggling to find the funds for more T, which likely would have delayed physical changes even more, Daz ended up washing away evidence of said bodily function, commenting, 'you should have said', This was insulting to me as a reader, and shocking to me as a female. Daz was not inexperienced with trans men and was not inexperienced with his 'toys', which he and his boyfriend described Stefan as, and as the one portrayed as a Master/Dom he had a duty that should not have been suppressed/ignored.

On top, Stefan was referred to as 'it' by Daz's boyfriend, Yannis, and by Daz's friend to whom he 'gifted' Stefan briefly as (entirely consensual) punishment. The scene with the friend absolutely turned my stomach. That Stefan welcomed all was perhaps in line with his pain-slut sub ways, but I could not help relate this to what, as a layperson, I perceived as incredibly strong elements of hatred of being transgender. It left me wondering about the reasons for this, and the source and what MM's motives were for creating Stefan - and this tale.

The absolute end for me was when Daz took Stefan unprotected, in both lower orifices, leaving Stefan to confront his unwanted female aspects of his body, by mention of having to get the morning-after pill. The book made me wonder about how Stefan, who knew he was trans, who had taken steps to physically become the man he should always been, could have so little respect for himself, so much hatred for himself and no sense of worth.

I am also not sure if the physical changes described by MM are accurate or how readers, of whom quite possibly a fair few might be trans men, might interpret this, i.e. might they take it as gospel? That's in a way an aside, as for me, this tale came across utterly as a trans man hating himself, having no respect for himself, hating his needs, his wants, his body, his life. I can't help but wonder what the purpose of the tale was, because sorry, it had not one positive about it.

Again, I question MM's motives for writing this tale. Maybe I've got it entirely wrong, and if so, I’d very much like to be corrected. This book, to me, felt so wrong on so many levels and seemed to be about hatred of being transgender at its worst. If it was a 'tool' to the author, I hope it was cathartic.

My apologies that this ‘review’ may not be respectfully or correctly worded in regards transgender issues, but I am avoiding using certain words that in my past experience have caused to pull reviews.
When an author like Matthew J. Metzger comes along us mere mortals can just sit back and relish in the gifts that he has bestowed upon us. His latest book "Sex in C Major" is his absolute best so far. It is a story of a "strange triad" consisting of two men, Daz and Yannis in their thirties who have been boyfriends since their teens and Stefan, who is twenty-one who Daz meets simply by chance and I will leave it at that, because the rest of the story is for you to discover on your own, especially the reason for the ever so intriguing title "Sex in C Major." But I will say it is an emotional "roller coaster" of a book, so to speak and when I read chapter 29 my heart was beating so fast and...wow!
If you are looking for a book that checks all of your perfect "romance" boxes and is about a character whose life can be easily and comfortably be labeled and wrapped up in a bow - this is not the book you're looking for.

If you are looking for something gritty and haunting and beautiful and powerful, pick this up immediately.

This is not an easy read, as you would expect from a story about someone who struggles so strongly with his own identity. But it's heartbreaking and amazing and so real!

All of the characters are complex and interesting and they just fit.

Stefan's story is one stays with you way past "the end."
